Since the beginning of social media platforms such as TikTok, there have been many concerns regarding the safety and confidentiality of their respective users. However, one that has been the most notorious is the powerful algorithm that causes members of the app to use the app for long periods of time. Considering that the age demographic of these companies revolves around teenagers to young adults, many of these kids are dealing with additive features that are becoming to avoid. Because of this, State Senator Suhas Subramaniyam has created a bill thats plans to protect people under 18 years of age from these additive features. More specifically, this bill was created to address the additive feed/algorithm keeps people using these apps for hours when they could be using that time for something more productive. This can negatively affect someones mental and physical health. His bill requires the platforms to seek parental permission for kids to use their app if they are under 18. By doing so, Suhas Subramaniyam makes sure that parents are monitoring their child’s screen time while also avoiding kids from spending excess time.
